DIY Tips, Photography EssentialsCommentIn today’s digital world, selfies have become a popular way to capture moments and share them with others. Whether you’re taking a selfie for social media, a profile picture, or just for fun, getting that perfect shot can sometimes be a challenge. Here are some tips to help you take a great selfie every time.
1. Find the Right Lighting
Lighting is one of the most important factors in photography, and selfies are no exception. Natural light is your best friend when it comes to taking a flattering selfie. Position yourself near a window or outdoors to take advantage of soft, diffused light. Avoid harsh overhead lighting, which can create unflattering shadows. If you’re indoors and natural light is limited, consider using a ring light to achieve a professional glow.
2. Choose the Best Angle
The angle at which you hold your camera can significantly impact your selfie. Holding your phone slightly above eye level and angling it downward can create a more flattering look by accentuating your eyes and reducing the appearance of a double chin. Experiment with different angles to find the one that highlights your best features.
3. Use the Right Background
A cluttered or distracting background can take away from your selfie. Opt for a simple, clean background that doesn’t compete with you as the subject. If you’re outdoors, look for a scenic backdrop that adds to the photo without overwhelming it. Remember, you want the focus to be on you, not the surroundings.
4. Master the Pose
Your pose can make a big difference in how your selfie turns out. Relax your face, smile naturally, and avoid overly exaggerated expressions. A slight tilt of the head can add interest to the shot. If you’re not sure how to pose, try taking a few practice shots to see what works best for you.
5. Use Selfie Mode or Timer
Most smartphones have a selfie mode or a front-facing camera that’s specifically designed for taking selfies. This mode often includes features like facial recognition and auto-focus, which help you get the best shot. If you need more time to prepare your pose, use the timer function to give yourself a few extra seconds before the camera clicks.
6. Edit, But Don’t Overdo It
Editing tools can help enhance your selfie, but it’s important not to go overboard. Adjustments to brightness, contrast, and sharpness can improve the quality of your photo, but be cautious with filters and retouching. You want your selfie to look like you, not a heavily edited version of yourself. A light touch is often the most effective.
7. Use Props or Accessories
Adding a prop or accessory to your selfie can make it more interesting and personal. Whether it’s a pair of sunglasses, a hat, or even a cup of coffee, props can help tell a story and add a unique touch to your photo. Just make sure that the prop doesn’t overshadow you as the main subject.
8. Experiment with Composition
Composition isn’t just for professional photographers—it can make a big difference in your selfies too. Use the rule of thirds by placing yourself slightly off-center in the frame to create a more dynamic image. Play around with different compositions until you find one that feels right.
9. Mind the Focus
Ensure that the camera is focused on you before taking the shot. Tap the screen where your face is to make sure the focus is set correctly. A blurry selfie can ruin an otherwise great photo, so take a moment to check that everything is sharp.
10. Practice Makes Perfect
Like anything, taking great selfies gets easier with practice. Don’t be afraid to take multiple shots until you get the one you’re happy with. The more you experiment with different angles, lighting, and poses, the better you’ll get at capturing the perfect selfie.
Taking a great selfie is a combination of good lighting, the right angle, and a bit of practice. By following these tips, you’ll be well on your way to capturing selfies that truly reflect your best self. Whether you’re in Denver, Colorado, or anywhere else in the world, these strategies will help you create photos you’ll love sharing.

How to Capture Memorable Portraits with Family and Friends: Tips from a Denver Photographer
Photography Essentials, DIY TipsCommentCreating lasting memories with family and friends is one of the most cherished aspects of life, and capturing those moments in portraits can make them last forever. As a Denver-based photographer, I’ve had the privilege of photographing countless families and groups of friends in the beautiful settings that Colorado offers. Here are my top tips for capturing meaningful and memorable portraits with your loved ones.
1. Choose the Right Location
Denver and the surrounding Colorado areas provide a stunning backdrop for any portrait session. Whether you prefer the urban vibe of downtown Denver, the natural beauty of the Rocky Mountains, or a serene park setting, the location you choose will set the tone for your portraits. Consider places that hold sentimental value or that offer a unique setting to make your photos truly special.
2. Timing is Everything
The time of day can dramatically affect the quality of your photos. In Denver, the golden hour—just after sunrise or before sunset—provides the best natural lighting, giving your portraits a warm, soft glow. Avoid shooting in the harsh midday sun, as it can create strong shadows and unflattering light. Instead, plan your session for early morning or late afternoon for the best results.
3. Coordinate Outfits Thoughtfully
While matching outfits can look too coordinated, selecting a color palette that complements each other is key to creating visually pleasing portraits. In Denver’s diverse environments, earth tones, soft pastels, or even vibrant colors can work beautifully depending on the setting. Encourage your family and friends to wear outfits that reflect their personal style while still harmonizing with the group.
4. Capture Genuine Interactions
The most memorable portraits often come from capturing genuine interactions rather than posed shots. Encourage your family and friends to engage with each other—whether it’s through laughter, a shared activity, or simply a loving glance. These candid moments can reveal the true essence of your relationships and create images that resonate deeply.
5. Include a Mix of Poses
While candid shots are essential, it’s also important to capture a variety of poses. Start with traditional group portraits where everyone is looking at the camera, then transition to more relaxed poses where people can interact naturally. Don’t forget to include individual portraits and smaller groupings, such as siblings, couples, or best friends, to add variety to your collection.
6. Focus on the Details
Sometimes, it’s the small details that make a portrait session truly special. Close-up shots of hands holding, a child’s playful expression, or a parent’s protective embrace can add emotional depth to your photos. These detailed shots help tell the story of your relationships in a more intimate way.
7. Be Yourself
Encourage everyone to relax and be themselves during the session. Authenticity is key to capturing meaningful portraits, so let go of the pressure to be perfect. Whether it’s a child’s mischievous grin or a spontaneous moment of laughter, these genuine expressions are what make your photos unique and memorable.
8. Use Props to Add Personality
Incorporating props can add a fun and personal touch to your portraits. Whether it’s a favorite book, a cherished family heirloom, or even something playful like balloons, props can help tell your story and add an extra layer of interest to your photos. Just make sure the props enhance the portrait rather than distract from the main focus—your relationships.
9. Work with a Professional Photographer
While it’s possible to capture great photos on your own, working with a professional photographer can elevate your portraits to the next level. A skilled photographer understands how to use lighting, composition, and timing to create stunning images that truly capture the essence of your relationships. Plus, they can help guide you through the session, making sure everyone feels comfortable and confident.
10. Create a Lasting Keepsake
After your session, consider creating a physical keepsake from your portraits, such as a photo album, framed prints, or a canvas. These tangible items can be cherished for years to come, serving as a constant reminder of the special moments you’ve shared with your loved ones.
Capturing portraits with family and friends is about more than just taking pictures—it’s about preserving the memories and emotions that make your relationships unique. By following these tips, you can ensure that your portraits not only look beautiful but also hold deep meaning for years to come.

Top Tips for Capturing Your Travel Memories: A Denver Photographer's Guide
Photography Essentials, Photography Locations, DIY TipsCommentTraveling offers countless opportunities to create memories that last a lifetime. As a Denver-based photographer, I've had the pleasure of capturing stunning landscapes, vibrant cultures, and unforgettable moments across Colorado and beyond. Here are my top tips for capturing your travel memories in a way that truly reflects the essence of your adventures.
1. Plan Ahead
Before you embark on your journey, research the locations you’ll be visiting. Understand the best times of day for lighting, identify key landmarks, and plan your shots. For example, in Colorado, the golden hour—shortly after sunrise or before sunset—can provide the perfect light for breathtaking landscape photography.
2. Capture the Details
While it’s important to get those iconic shots, don’t forget the small details that tell the story of your journey. Whether it’s the texture of a market stall in Denver or the intricate designs of a historic building in Colorado Springs, capturing these details can add depth and richness to your travel photos.
3. Embrace Candid Moments
Some of the best travel photos are those that capture candid moments. Whether it’s a local interaction, a spontaneous laugh, or a moment of quiet reflection, these shots often evoke the strongest emotions and memories. As you explore new places, keep your camera ready and your eyes open for these unscripted moments.
4. Use Natural Light
Natural light can make a significant difference in the quality of your photos. In Colorado, the sunlight is often bright and clear, especially at higher altitudes. Take advantage of this by shooting during the golden hour or using the soft, diffused light on cloudy days to capture your subjects in the best light.
5. Include People in Your Shots
Incorporating people into your travel photos adds a human element that can make your images more relatable and engaging. Whether it’s a fellow traveler, a local resident, or even yourself, including people can help tell the story of your journey and the connections you made along the way.
6. Experiment with Angles and Perspectives
Don’t be afraid to experiment with different angles and perspectives. Shoot from high above to capture the vastness of a landscape, or get down low to emphasize the scale of a towering mountain. Changing your viewpoint can result in more dynamic and interesting photos that stand out from the usual travel shots.
7. Keep It Simple
Sometimes, less is more. Focus on a single subject or a clean composition to create a strong, impactful image. Whether you’re photographing the rugged beauty of the Rockies or the vibrant streets of Denver, simplicity can often lead to more powerful and memorable photos.
8. Practice Patience
Great photography often requires patience. Whether you’re waiting for the perfect light, the right moment, or for a crowd to clear, taking the time to wait can result in a much better shot. As you travel through Colorado or any other destination, give yourself the time to capture the best possible images.
9. Edit Thoughtfully
Once you’ve returned from your travels, take the time to edit your photos thoughtfully. Enhance colors, adjust lighting, and crop as needed to bring out the best in your images. However, be careful not to over-edit; keeping your photos natural will help them resonate more with viewers.
10. Tell a Story
Finally, remember that your travel photos should tell a story. Think about how each image fits into the narrative of your journey, and arrange them in a way that takes viewers on the adventure with you. Whether you’re sharing your photos online or creating a physical album, telling a cohesive story will make your travel memories even more meaningful.
Travel photography is all about capturing the essence of your experiences in a way that brings your memories to life. By following these tips, you can ensure that your travel photos are not only beautiful but also truly reflective of your adventures.

Twin Lakes Adventures (Part 2)
Brand Photoshoots, Outdoor Industry, Photography Locations, WanderlustCommentHere are some more photos from my late July visit to Twin Lakes Adventures. On this trip, I stayed in a campervan, but next time, I'll be returning in my beloved 4Runner!
I can't recommend this spot enough for kayaking in Colorado. While Denver-area reservoirs are convenient for swimming and close to the city, they don’t compare to the alpine beauty of Twin Lakes.
And some parts of Colorado can be hard to access (think Telluride and Lake City), so Twin Lakes is ideally situated. It’s centrally located between Aspen, Leadville, Crested Butte, and Buena Vista. I've also visited Grand Lake, but in my opinion, Twin Lakes offers a more captivating backdrop and boasts even more stunning water hues.
Twin Lakes Adventures
Brand Photoshoots, Outdoor Industry, Photography Locations, WanderlustCommentI recently had the opportunity to capture some photos for a friend who just purchased a canoe and kayak rental company from a retiring owner. This summer marked her first season in business, and I was lucky enough to visit at the end of July to see everything firsthand. During my two-day visit, I documented the beautiful setting and exciting atmosphere. Plans are already in the works to elevate the guest experience even further!
The weather couldn’t have been more perfect. While much of Colorado has been hit with August thunderstorms, I managed to visit during a drier, sunnier window, avoiding major monsoons. For that, I am incredibly grateful!

Outdoor IndustryCommentMy Midsummer Campervan Adventure in Central Colorado
Outdoor IndustryCommentOn Sunday, July 28, I embarked on a 5-day adventure in a Sprinter Mercedes campervan, and I couldn’t have been more excited! The onboarding process was seamless, with a thorough walkthrough of all the van's incredible features. I was amazed by everything it had to offer—there’s so much packed into this compact and functional home on wheels.
The campervan includes all the essentials, like a built-in gas stove, a well-sized refrigerator, and plenty of storage space with sleek cupboards for personal items. One of my favorite features is the built-in trash can, which keeps things tidy on the go. It also has a 10-gallon water tank and a 20-gallon shower in the back—complete with hot water! There’s something about having hot water in the wilderness that makes the experience feel a little more luxurious. The shower has a moveable spray, perfect for washing up, as long as you can find a private spot.
One of the coolest features is the retractable awning that transforms the campervan into a shaded outdoor living space—essentially turning it into a porch wherever you go, perfect for relaxing and enjoying the views.
The campervan also comes with a built-in heater, which is a game changer. It’s incredibly easy to use—just press a button, and you're all set. This heater runs on the same diesel fuel as the engine, using less than half a gallon per night. It kept me warm and toasty during those chilly mountain nights when temperatures dipped to 30 degrees. I loved that I could wear regular pajamas instead of bundling up in camp layers like I would in a tent.
The backseat is also well-equipped, with seatbelts for four and multiple USB ports and electrical outlets—ideal for charging devices or even working remotely. It’s amazing to be able to stay connected to work while immersed in nature, allowing for greater flexibility.
As for driving, I was impressed by how well the van handled. Despite its size, it was easy to maneuver on winding mountain roads and even on gravel, making it perfect for reaching those off-the-beaten-path dispersed camping spots in national forests.
On the first day of my adventure, after stocking up at Costco, I drove 2.5 hours to an incredible dispersed campsite on a hillside overlooking Twin Lakes and the majestic Sawatch Range in central Colorado. The snow-capped peaks in the distance were stunning. I stayed there for three peaceful nights, enjoying the solitude and reconnecting with nature. During my stay, I visited a dear friend who recently launched a canoe and kayak business at Twin Lakes.
This spot was perfect for self-reflection, journaling, and meditation. The serenity of the mountains combined with the beautiful landscape made it a truly restorative experience.
On July 31, I continued my journey by driving over Cottonwood Pass, a route I’d never taken before. The scenic drive led me to the breathtaking Taylor Reservoir and canyon, and from there, I made my way to Crested Butte. I found a great camping spot at Washington Gulch, a popular area with other campers but with stunning views and an inviting atmosphere.
The next day, I hiked a nearby trail that was bursting with vibrant wildflowers, especially the beautiful yellow varieties that are common in late July and early August. From the trail, I could see Castle Peak and the Maroon Bells of Aspen in the distance—close by, yet still a three-hour drive away.
The weather throughout my trip couldn’t have been more perfect. While Colorado faced heavy monsoons and stormy weather in the following weeks, I was fortunate to enjoy clear blue skies and sunshine the entire time.
Crested Butte in the summer is a must-see, especially if you visit during mid-July when the wildflowers are at their peak. The combination of stunning natural beauty, perfect weather, and the freedom of van life made this part of the trip truly unforgettable.
This campervan adventure was the perfect blend of exploration and relaxation, and I can’t wait to see where the next journey takes me.

Outdoor IndustryCommentI love having these products on the go with me anytime I’m playing in nature!!!
According to Klean Freak’s website:
“The Klean Freak story began on a camping trip in Zion National Park. Our creator, a world traveler known to get himself in a lot of dirty, nasty, sticky icky icky, ooh wee situations, found himself in yet another freakin' funky predicament after a long hike. If only there were a product, he thought, that provided single use body wipes infused with amazing, natural ingredients and conveniently packaged for the on-the-go individual. Well there wasn’t, so he smelled. BUT, the seed was planted, and it set us on our mission to cure the world of nasty B.O., one product at a time.
Klean Freak teamed up with some dang good scientists to formulate the “best of the best” body wipes that gives you a refreshing, confidence-boosting kind of klean. We tapped into some amazing ingredients that hydrate the skin while also ridding it of bad bacteria, cleared by the FDA and safe for even the most sensitive skin. Plus, our amazing scents leave you smelling freakishly fresh... And not like a baby's butt. We think that’s a huge plus.”

Navigating Colorado’s winding mountain roads in the van was a bit of a learning curve, but it added to the adventure and made the journey all the more memorable.
Steamboat Springs in the summertime is truly enchanting. The lush, green landscapes are vibrant and alive, and even though timing can be everything when chasing the perfect scenery, Steamboat never disappoints.
